Posted by Bob Merberg in Employee Wellness Programs, Mind Mapping, Uncategorized on October 28, 2011
Tweet chats and mind maps were made for each other. Below is my first real effort at a mind map — based on October 19th’s CoHealth Tweetchat, “Making Workplace Wellness Social.” Click on the thumbnail for the full-sized image.
Read a recap of the tweet chat on Greg Matthews’ blog.
Find out more about CoHealth tweet chats on Fran Melmed”s blog. Fran tells me that the next tweet chat, on November 16, will be about giving employees what they want. I’ll be participating and hope you will, too.

Posted by Bob Merberg in Commentary, Employee Wellness Programs, Uncategorized on January 10, 2011
It’s easy to get jaded about awards for employee wellness programs, or to feel that doing presentations at conferences and talking to the media are luxuries you don’t have time for. But seeking public recognition of your program’s accomplishments is something you should see as an essential part of your job. Promoting your program to the world outside your organization is as important as promoting it internally, and the two are intrinsically connected.
There’s nothing self-serving about it. Public recognition of your employee wellness program will… Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Bob Merberg in Commentary, Employee Wellness Programs, GINA, Uncategorized on December 18, 2010
Here, in no particular order, are the Employee Wellness Network‘s picks for 2010′s Top 10 Developments in Employee Wellness:
- The Washington Post reveals what most employee benefit managers long suspected: “Misleading claims about Safeway wellness incentives shape health-care bill.” Safeway disagrees.
- A new study lends credence to return-on-investment (ROI) claims. In the February issue of Health Affairs, a meta-analysis suggests that medical costs fall by $3.27 and absenteeism costs fall by $2.73 for every dollar spent on employee wellness programs.
- A newer study casts doubt on ROI claims. In July 2010, a study by the National Institute for Health Care Reform concludes, “ROI is uncertain and measurement Read the rest of this entry »
The Employee Wellness Network and CoHealth merge
Posted by Bob Merberg in Announcements, Uncategorized on August 18, 2010
On August 18, the Employee Wellness Network and CoHealth, another employee wellness community, joined forces.
CoHealth is a social network that offers a monthly Tweetchat and, formerly, a Ning network. The Tweetchats are facilitated by Fran Melmed and Greg Matthews, two current tEWN members. The chats are held every third Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. (EST). They cover one or two topics each chat, with the community bringing questions, ideas and perspectives based on their experience. Past topics have included privacy, happiness in the workplace, and expanding wellness to the family. Upcoming topics include behavior change, developing an effective communication strategy, and using health gadgets and other shiny objects.
CoHealth will be closing up shop on its Ning network and using our social network to share information about upcoming chats, host episode transcripts, and join our online discussions. Take some time to familiarize yourself with CoHealth.
Employee Wellness Pros Convene on New Social Media Site
Posted by Bob Merberg in Announcements on April 5, 2010
The Employee Wellness Network, a social networking site that serves as the crossroads for professionals responsible for workplace health and wellness programs, officially launches on April 5, 2010, the first day of National Workplace Wellness Week.
This new online community, which occasionally goes by the acronym tEWN, shares many of the features of popular social networking communities — such as friend connections, online discussions, event listings, messaging, and special interest groups — but also includes features specific to employee wellness professionals. There is a “bookstore” section, powered by Amazon.com, that includes books specifically relevant to employee wellness, and a Job section in which users can find opportunities to advance their careers. Membership in the network is completely free of charge.
In recent years, interest in employee wellness has skyrocketed. “Under the pressure of spiraling health care costs and a need to leave no stone unturned in trying to Read the rest of this entry »

ShapeUp Shapes Up the Employee Wellness Debate
Posted by Bob Merberg in Commentary, Employee Wellness Programs, Reporting, ShapeUp, Uncategorized on March 3, 2012
I’m a fan of ShapeUp (formerly Shape Up the Nation), the employee wellness vendor that, in its own words, “combines social networking, social gaming, and financial incentives to make wellness fun, drive behavior change, and save companies money.”
While it seems ShapeUp has inched toward conformity by adopting (and adapting) a few conventional pieces of the employee wellness puzzle — like health risk appraisals and coaching — I still credit them with being a prominent vendor that challenges the status quo. And, in my humble opinion, few industries Read the rest of this entry »
